Description
QUADRANT by D Hackett
A device used to determine position by observing the sun, moon or stars. The base of the quadrant was held parallel to the horizon and the movable arm rotated until a star was sighted. By consulting star charts, a navigator could determine where he was. Columbus had a quadrant, but there is evidence he did not trust it, only used it a few times during the voyage and ignored the results when he disagreed with them
