Beauty Of The Grotto by D Hackett
Scott Springs Park is a 22-acre passive nature park surrounding a spring fed pond bordered with a cave providing the citizens of Ocala with a natural wildlife haven in the busy and fast-growing southwest commercial area of the city.
A grotto is any type of natural cave that is associated with modern, historic, or prehistoric use by humans. A grotto is often a small cave near water and often has freshwater springs nearby. Grottos are very often in limestone geology where the acidity dissolved in percolating water has dissolved the carbonates of the rock matrix as it has passed through what were originally small fissures.
All of Florida is underlain by limestone which occurs at various depths beneath the surface and the underground aquifer rushes through these limestone caverns. Water that is underground acts like slow-motion streams, rivers, and lakes. Underground water moves slowly. The water is under pressure from all sides, and it must go around endless tiny corners and passageways in rock. A spring is any natural situation where water flows to the surface of the earth from underground. Thus, a spring is a site where the aquifer surface meets the ground surface. Florida has an estimated 1,000 springs -- the greatest concentration of springs on Earth.
