El Galeon Reflection Black and White by D Hackett
In 2006, The Nao Victoria Foundation undertook a special project to reconstruct, to scale, a 16th Century Spanish Galleon. The ship, which was designed and built in Spain by Ignacio Fernandez Vial and is owned by the Nao Victoria Foundation, carries more than 9,600 square feet of sail. Ceustodio said it takes a minimum of 19 sailors to work the ship, but the preferred number is around 23. El Galen Andaluca (referred to as in Spain) is a 170 foot, by 125-feet-tall, has a 30-foot beam, 495 ton, draws 10.5 feet of water, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spains West Indies fleet. With information about 16th century European sailing techniques and technology, as well as important Florida history exhibits, El Galen will tell the 500 year story since the arrival of Juan Ponce de Len on the eastern shore of Florida. St. Augustine has been named El Galen's home American port for the foreseeable future.
The Nao Victoria Foundation relies on a specialized team which unites historians, documentarists and paleographers. They all have an extensive experience researching Spanish and European archives to find and localize original historical documents, iconography, maps, plans, drawings, etc. from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and then use these materials as documentary material or research source, and also for educational and out-reach purposes.
