Description
Oak Tree Landscape by D Hackett
Most people are surprised to learn that Florida has areas with rolling hills and beautiful oak trees. This drawing was inspired by these areas of Florida. This was drawn on toned paper using pencil, colored pencil, colored markers, paint and soft pastels.
Florida Topography
Rolling Hills
The panhandle portion of the state, that which borders Georgia and Alabama, comprises low, rolling hills, much like the topography of its bordering states. Lakewood has the highest elevation, 345 feet above sea level. Near the Gulf Coast line, the topography turns largely to swamp lands, rising no higher than seven feet above sea level.
Swamp Lands
In addition to the Gulf Coast region of swamp land on the panhandle, the peninsular section for Florida -- the largest section of the state -- has at least 5000 square miles of swamp land as well. The center "spine" of the peninsula matches the rolling topography of the panhandle, but is also sprinkled with lakes and springs that well-up a staggering 7 billion gallons of fresh water per day through cracks in its limestone crust.
