The Original Bridge of Lions before it was taken down and restored.
The unique Bridge of Lions is one of St. Augustine Florida's most noticeable structures, visible in almost every view of the St. Augustine skyline. The St Augustine Bridge of Lions is a double leaf, drawback bascule bridge that spans St. Augustine's Intercostal Waterway over Mantanza's Bay, connecting Anastasia Island with Downtown St. Augustine. Built in 1926, the bridge is named after the stone lions situated at the west end of the bridge. The lions that call the Bridge of Lions home in St. Augustine were created and designed by Italian sculptor, Romanelli of Florence Italy and donated by Dr. Andrew Anderson, a close friend of Henry Flagler, one of St. Augustine's most renowned developers.
The bridge has since been renovated and the lions preserved. Known as one of St. Augustine's most famous sites, the Bridge of Lions is listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with other places like Castillo de San Marcos.
