Alligator Of The World by D Hackett
Bruce and Laura Gross wanted to do something special to support the construction of Heavener Hall, the Warrington College of Business Administrations new undergraduate building. They wanted a work of art to convey that Warrington alumni are doing amazing things all around the world. After brainstorming sessions with the College; Howie Ferguson, Assistant Director at UF Planning, Design & Construction; Chris Williams, the Boston-based artist commissioned for the piece; and Amy Vigilante, University Galleries Director and Chief Curator; their concept was realized: A Gator on top of the world.
The workwhich took five months for Williams to completeis 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, weighs approximately 1,500 pounds, and is entirely bronze. The globe is hollow, inspired by images of globes seen at Worlds Fairs. On top of the globe is a gator that is composed of more than a thousand pieces of bronze welded together, an intricate technique that Williams utilizes and Bruce believed would be perfect for a gators scales.
The work is entitled, Gator Ubiquity. Merriam-Webster defines ubiquity as presence everywhere or in many places especially simultaneously. Bruce believes that definition accurately characterizes the Colleges and The Gator Nations worldwide presence.
Not only will their unique gift catch the attention of Warrington students, but it will also draw eyes from curious drivers on University Avenue. The Grosses gift is an impressive bronze sculpture that now resides on the west side of the building adjacent to Bryan and Matherly Halls.
