Artist's Description
Night Iwo Jima Memorial by D Hackett
The original image was taken on a school safety patrol trip to Washington DC. One evening we went to different memorials to see them at night. This is the Lincoln Memorial at night and was an amazing shot that I captured that night.
Marine Corps Memorial Iwo Jima Statue
Washington DC
One of the largest bronze statues ever cast, this memorial commemorates all the marines who have died in battle since 1775. The 32-foot high figures are shown erecting a 60-foot bronze flag pole from which a cloth flag flies 24 hrs. a day. Felis W. deWeldon created the monument from a famous photograph showing the flag being raised on Mount Suribachi during World War II.
The Battle of Iwo Jima
On February 19, 1945 about 70,000 marines invaded the small Pacific Island of Iwo Jima which was under control of the Japanese army. The island was a strategic objective due to its airfield which was used for kamikaze attacks.
