Granite Lion by D Hackett
On July 2nd, 2015 a second pair of lions was unveiled at the eastern end of the bridge in Davis Park on Anastasia Island. They were gifted to the City of St. Augustine by Wolfgang and Miki Schau, residents of Davis Shores on the island. Like many others, they fell in love with the bridge and the lions guarding it. At one end of the bridge, the two marble lions, Firm and Faithful, were perched watching over St. Augustines downtown. They were created in 1927 by Italian sculptor F. Romanelli who sculpted them based on a pair of statues at the Loggia de Lanzi in Florence. On the other end of the bridge, nothing.
To create a balance, the couple took it upon themselves to create siblings for the lions and put them in Davis Park on the east side of the bridge. The lions were commissioned in the same style as the other lions on the Bridge werein the style of the Medici lions in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, Italy, but were made with granite. Wolfgang and Miki had their new lions fashioned in a similar design and style but insist the new lions are not copies but instead siblings with distinct differences.
The Schaus have named the new lions Pax y Peli or Latin for Peace and Happiness. What fitting names for the sisters to the original lions named Fiel y Firme or Latin for Faithful and Firm.
